Friday Musings: Home Is…

One of the many concepts that expatriation forces us to redefine is that of Home.

What makes a house a home? I had the opportunity to ask myself this question- a perennial favourite of shelter magazines- as I settled into my new home today.

No, I have not moved into a new place. But I recently joined my local University Women’s Club and after spending my first afternoon there, I already feel very much at home in the meeting room.

I believe it has little to do with the decor or the many activities being offered, although that certainly helps too. The three main reasons why I feel so comfortable there are much more basic than that:
- The gorgeous light pouring in through the large windows;
- A selection of delicious, fragrant teas for self-service;
- The laughter, the lively debates and the sense of fellowship that fill every corner of the building.

There you have it, my recipe for feeling at home: beauty, enjoyment of the senses and companionship. With these anchors in place, I am good to go pretty much anywhere in the world.

What about you? What are your anchors?
